Description: Modern Tales of Primitive Culture: What followed from the murder of a patriarchal father by a repressed primal horde? How did slaves initiate a revolt in morals that turned the tables on their oppressive masters? What was behind stories of a hesitant Irishwoman yielding to the dark aura of ancient Mexico or sexually-adept Tahitians exposing the genitalia of a transgender Frenchman? In this course, we will examine startling questions such as these in order to better understand the relationship between progress and the primitive. The focus will be on modernist accounts from Europe and the Caribbean written between 1885 and 1955. We will assess works written by Diderot, Nietzsche, Conrad, Freud, Lawrence, Césaire, Senghor, Fanon, and Bataille. Course readings creatively blend empirical and fictional accounts and include novels, memoirs, poems, dialogues, and imaginative essays.
