Section Info:
Topic: World War II Description: This course looks at World War II from various perspectives. We will start with diplomatic negotiations and military campaigns from 1931 to 1945. This course also focuses on culture, discussing how racial animosity and gender concerns affected the conduct of war and postwar occupation. Moreover, we will pay attention to the home front and talk about how ordinary people experienced and joined the war. Although environment is often overlooked, this course considers the relationship between environment and the war. Further, we will discuss memory of World War II and ask why our memory of the conflict still clashes in 2019. In addition, this course looks at legacies of the war with focus on colonialism, examining how the conflict impacted colonies of Euro-American and Japanese empires and how the war created a new type of colonialism founded on a web of U.S. military bases around the world. I will use cartoons, novels, films, songs, and even video games besides a textbook and articles in this course.
