Description: This course examines the development of global capitalism from the 16th Century to the present. Students will engage with questions such as: What is capitalism? When, where, and how did it emerge as a major system or set of relations structuring societies economically, socially, and politically? How has capitalism changed across time and space? What is the historical relationship between capitalism and the state? Capitalism and nationalism? Capitalism and race? Capitalism and gender? Capitalism and colonization? Capitalism and empire? Capitalism and violence – extralegal and state violence? Capitalism and culture? What kinds of movements and institutions developed as a response or challenge to capitalism and how have they affected societies? Students will read, discuss, critically reflect on, and write about important works by historians and other scholars, artists, and intellectuals who have grappled with these questions.
