Audio Recording Techniques
Section Info:
An introduction to the basic principles and best practices of audio recording, including an overview of physical properties of sound (acoustics/psychoacoustics), analog and digital audio, microphones and microphone placement, and best recording practices within a recording studio environment. The course will be presented as a combination of lectures with hands-on projects to familiarize students with proper gain and signal staging, microphone placement, and recording practices. Grading will be based on assigned lab projects and written exams. Lab times will be assigned. This course is restricted to senior and graduate music majors.

"Introduction to contemporary approaches to creating interactive music. Utilizing mobile devices, MIDI controllers, wiimotes, Arduino boards, and the SuperCollider audio programming language, students complete four introductory two-week modules and pursue a final interactive music project. Concepts are primarily presented through prepared online instructional videos, with class time being used for workshopping, discussion, sharing works-in-progress, and troubleshooting. Intended for students who have completed 499C in Fall 2017 or students with a strong background in digital audio, computer programming, and/or electrical engineering. Instructor permission required."

This course is designed to introduce and develop the essential skills for work as a music director in productions for the contemporary musical stage and high-level freelance work. Students will learn the rudiments of arranging and improvisation from a harmonic skeleton, become acquainted with the use of computers and stand-alone synthesizers, develop the skill of conducting from the keyboard, and attain basic familiarity with contemporary and classical musical theater vocal and instrumental styles. Students will prepare a musical to teach the class applying in a practical manner the skills studied. Excerpts from this musical will also be arranged for vocal and variable instrumental ensembles.
