TOPIC: Music and Animals In this course, we will explore relationships between (nonhuman) animals and music. We will examine musical works and practices (from diverse musical traditions) inspired by animals. We will discuss music performed for animals as listeners. We will also learn about performers who make music alongside animals. Through an engagement with research in bioacoustics and zoomusicology, we will consider similarities between music and some forms of animal communication. Throughout, we will discuss animal rights, human/nonhuman animal relations, and various conceptualizations of both “animals” and “music.”
