TOPIC: Algorithmic Design of Music I An exploration of algorithmic design applied to the art of music composition. Through hands-on instruction students learn how to express compositional ideas as statements in an easy-to-learn music composition language called SAL. We experiment with algorithms in variety of different contexts including score generation with MusicXML/Sibelius, MIDI, and interactive control over the Disklaver. Topics covered in the course include: o Symbolic processing of musical data o Mapping and Transformations o Randomness, chaos, and Markov chains o Pattern-based composition o Spectral composition and acoustics o Controlling MIDI processing in real time.
