Title: Modern China: A History in International and Transnational Contexts Topic: This course discusses major themes of Chinese history from the World War II through the Cold War to the present. It emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach that engages innovative scholarship from various perspectives and methodologies, and it combines lectures, films, and discussions. The goal of the class is not to provide answers to all the questions we have but rather to question many answers we thought we have about the enormous political, social and cultural changes of modern China. Our emphasis will be on how China was transformed from a war-torn semi-colony in the 1930s to a global economic power today, particularly on its changing role in the international and transnational order, and the impact of these transformations on the social organization and everyday life of its ordinary people. This class is designed to maximize teaching activities that promote learning by interaction. Prerequisite: History 120 or History 221 or History 222 or other courses on Chinese and East Asian history and culture.Meets with LAW 792, Sec U3.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
