Spring 2018 All Classes

All Classes

Credit: 3 hours.

The United States' civil war (1861-1865) and the years of postwar "reconstruction" (conventionally dated as 1865-1877). During this period as a whole, the nation underwent its second revolution -- a revolution more radical in its impact than the one that freed it from the British Empire. Much about U.S. history for the next century and more was decided during these critical years.

Title: Civil War & Reconstruction Topic: This course begins with a brief investigation of the antebellum period before treating the war years themselves (1861-65). A month is pent strictly on the chronology of the war. This will serve as a good foundation before moving into the books and theme-based discussion that constitutes the heart of the course. This timeline-into-books formula will be repeated for the Reconstruction (1865-77) component of the class. The goal is for students to acquire a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the Civil War and Reconstruction by looking at the era through different and diverse lenses so as to draw the most complete picture possible.
