An examination of major genres historians have employed to present history in the public arena, including documentary films, public memorials, legal testimony and museum exhibits. Students will explore both the social dynamics of public commemoration and the techniques historians employ when communicating complex ideas and events to a general audience.

Title: Public History Topic: What does it mean to practice "public history?" How do historians address the general public - and specific publics within it - outside of their academic communities? How do historians engage with communities that might want assistance publicizing their own pasts? How has the growing importance of digital platforms and public spaces for the exhibition and dissemination of historical knowledge shaped historians' engagements with various kinds of publics? This course will examine several genres historians have employed to produce and present history in the public arena, such as public memorials, museums exhibits aimed at a general audience, and digitial presentations of documentary sources. Students will explore and evaluate the social dynamics affecting public understandings of the past, the techniques historians employ to communitcate complex ideas and events to general audiences, and the ways historians approach collaborative projects producing history with particular groups. The course will involve both an exploration of these methods for producing and conveying public history and a major collaborative projects in which students will work together to produce one or more online exhibits on significant events in the history of the University of Illinois.
