Section Title:
Music of Claude Debussy
Section Info:
Music 507A is a graduate-level seminar providing a detailed and in-depth analytical introduction to the music of Claude Debussy. The semester will consist of four roughly chronological units covering the entirety of his career through different facets of his oeuvre: his songs (from the early songs to the Trois chansons de Bilitis), his middle-period orchestral music (Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Nocturnes, and La mer), his piano Preludes (Books 1 and 2), and his late music (Jeux and the three sonatas). Our main interests will be Debussy's approaches to musical form, his harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic language, his vocal writing and his musical 'readings' of poetry, his innovative treatment of the piano, his orchestration, the unique and idiosyncratic 'rhetoric' of his music, and the analytical problems, interpretive issues, and new musical possibilities it raises. The course will be based primarily on score study and analysis. There will also be regular reading assignments to supplement our in-class discussion with different interpretive and analytical perspectives. At the end of the semester, all participants will present an original analysis of a significant Debussy piece or pieces.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Music Education or Music or Musicology major(s). Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
