Credit: 2 hours.
Acquaints the student with a variety of opera, operetta, and musical theatre literature in contrasting styles and historical periods, culminating in a public performance of numerous opera scenes each semester. Develops skills as both a solo and ensemble performer. Introduces skills related to the field of operatic performance, including but not limited to stage movement, mind-body awareness, diction, acting, and improvisational techniques. Forms and integrates a performing operatic ensemble to serve as an outreach group that may perform in selected K-12 schools. Intended for vocal performance, vocal music education and vocal accompanying/coaching majors; others by consent of instructor. Audition required for admission.
2 undergraduate hours. 2 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours. (Summer session, 1 hour of credit). Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
