Section Title:
Contemporary Music Listening
Section Info:
The focus will be primarily on listening to a large amount of contemporary music (most of it from the past c.60 years), with supportive discussion of the theoretical, philosophical, and technical elements. The repertoire is intended to be mostly works that are not covered in 408E (Form & Analysis of Works Since World War II). The emphasis will be on listening, which will reduce, but not eliminate the analysis component. The purpose of the course is to expand familiarity with a large and diverse body of contemporary work, and to pursue the details of these works in written projects. In addition to weekly assignments students will be expected to produce a final written analysis project, or a combination of a composition and an analysis project. All students will make an in-class presentation of their final project. Prerequisite: MUS 408E, MUS 202, or consent of instructor.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Voice or Instrumental Music or Music Composition or Music History or Open Studies or Music or Musicology or Jazz Performance major(s).

Section Title:
Max-MSP
Section Info:
In this course, composers and performers will team up to create interactive works for instruments and singers. We will experiment with sampling, motion-tracking, live effects, etc., using Cycling 74's Max software. The works you create will be real collaborations: performers and composers together will discover new playing techniques, mic placement, and techniques of motion-tracking and live video manipulation; in early December there will be a concert featuring your collaborative works. Composers will learn how to create patches with Max and Jitter (Max's video component), as well as collaborating with performers. Performers will learn enough about Max to be able to run a performance by themselves, and will also learn about midi, mic placement, amplification, and all the other basics of wired performance.
