TOPIC: "Music, Women, and Representation in the 19th Century." In the nineteenth century, women had an increasingly important presence in the Western musical world as composers, musicians, muses, and more. This course will examine works by women composers and works by male composers that were inspired by or that feature representations of women. Through these works, we will discover the social and historical context that contributed to their creation and reception, as well as the sociocultural challenges that women faced while forging new artistic pathways.
