Section Info:
This opera survey course considers the legacy of comic opera and commedia dell?arte traditions in the period spanning from the late 18th century (Haydn's Il mondo della luna/Mozart?s trilogy with Da Ponte) and early 19th century (Rossini/Donizetti) through to the mid-twentieth century. Special attention will be paid to generically hybrid works?the intersection of comedy and tragedy. Later 19th-century repertoire will include Verdi?s Falstaff and Leoncavallo?s Pagliacci before we turn our attention to Ariadne auf Naxos, Prokofiev?s The Love for Three Oranges, Dmitri Shostakovich's The Nose, and Stravinsky?s The Rake's Progress.
