Section Title:
Storymaking: Narrative Arts
Section Info:
Meets with CW 202-D. In Storymaking, we’ll explore the rich range of craft across the spectrum of contemporary narrative arts: fiction, film, video games, graphic novels, television, picture books, theater—all art forms centered around story. Working from a creator’s point of view, we’ll deconstruct the storytelling tools, techniques, and processes used in these varied narrative fields, while also emphasizing foundational concepts of storymaking across form and genre. We will read and watch and listen and play. We will break down film scenes, close-read short fiction, explore ludonarrative game arcs, and contemplate many other form-specific aspects of storycraft. We’ll examine multi-form adaptations such as The Last of Us, Jaws, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. We’ll have guests visiting class from time to time, working practitioners in their narrative fields. Although not a workshop, Storymaking culminates in a final project in a narrative form chosen by the student and instructor, to be shared with the class.

Section Info:
One Little Spark: Disney Storytelling, Culture, and Fandom: From theme parks to video games, hand-drawn animation to mascot characters, the Walt Disney Company was formed through a “journey into imagination” by pioneering and experimenting with storytelling in various forms, cultivating devoted fans and creating a media empire. In 2024, the Walt Disney Company brought in $91 billion through these entertainment ventures. How did the Disney brand use storytelling to establish such prominent cultural dominance? This course will critically explore Disney’s socio-economic and cultural impacts through analysis of its theme parks, theatrical offerings/licensing, and fan behavior.
