Description: The purpose of this course is to provide a common historiographical and methodological foundation on which students will build their own original historical research. Structured on the theme of “Oral History & the Modern U.S.,” this course explores the pleasures and challenges of creating and using oral history as a method for historical research. We will begin by tracing the emergence of oral history in the 1970s as a result of broader civil and social justice movements. The histories we will focus on highlight the stories of underrepresented people whose experiences are often ignored or not represented in mainstream history courses. This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for Advanced Composition.

Topic: Social Network Analysis Description: Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a digital methodological approach used to determine degrees of connectedness among indi¬viduals based on the documented nature of their interactions. It expands on traditional meth¬ods of examining how people interact by adding the ability to create diagrams, or “sociograms” representing de¬grees of social connected¬ness. In recent years, the coverage of the “social network” approach has been broadened to incorporate not only individuals but also other forms of recurrent data, such as geographical connections. Although the material in the course will be grounded in the pre-modern period, the methodologies are applicable to all periods of history. Students will be exposed to the digital skills needed to apply SNA effectively to the study of a particular historical topic.
