Description: This course examines the role of highways and automobiles in the making of the modern United States. Key topics include work and labor in the auto and trucking industries, the place of highways in urban and suburban development, and struggles over freedom, justice, and policing on U.S. roads. Throughout the course we will devote special attention to the cultural history of highways, cars, and “automobility," through discussion of key works of film, literature, music, and design.
