Topic: Europe Between the Wars Description: This course examines the corrugated political and cultural landscape of Europe from the demise of the great continental empires after World War I to the creation of the thousand-year Reich at the start of World War II. This “Age of Extremes” saw the establishment of liberal democracies, the flourishing of radical artistic movements, and the birth of mass technologies such as radio and film. At the same time, this democratic age generated fierce ideological movements with Communism and fascism, the sudden rise of dictators, and the largest economic disaster in modern history. People drank Coke, put on Nivea, and voted for Hitler. We will explore these decades between the two world wars through its sources, manifestos, speeches, films, and novels.
