We will learn about the origins of Indigenous peoples in the Americas, the process of annexation of Indigenous lands and colonization of Indigenous peoples by the U.S. government, the near extinction of bison and other animals by settlers, environmental changes, state-sponsored violence inflicted on ethnic Mexicans in the U.S. borderlands and U.S. settler-colonialism. We will also examine enduring myths about the American West and their impact on U.S. culture. This course will be taught in a lecture and discussion format; assignments might include leading class discussion, public presentations, in-class and written assignments.
