Students will gain a strength-based overview of autism throughout the lifespan, including educational and employment outcomes, historical perspectives, neurodiversity and autistic identity, and cultural biases and barriers to inclusion. Practical strategies for supporting inclusion and success for individuals on the autism spectrum will be highlighted.

Credit is not given for both HDFS 398 Autism: Current Topics and HDFS 255.

Neurodiversity: This course will expose future professionals and those influenced by autism and neurodiversity from all fields - from business to engineering, education to social-work - to deeper understanding of themselves and their peers on the autism spectrum. Study of current topics surrounding autism will create a framework for acceptance and inclusion. Topics include: understanding autism, autism and gender, myths and biases about neurodiversity, neurodiversity and inclusion, and more.
