TOPIC: The String Quartet in Sound, Film, and Fiction This class considers the string quartet from c.1750 to the present day in a deliberately wide-ranging manner. It does so to encourage a nuanced understanding of not just the changing compositional techniques that composers have employed when writing string quartets, but also what sound recording and ephemeral sources can reveal about how approaches to performance have changed, and – more broadly – how the idea of the string quartet has been constructed in the Western cultural imagination. We will study a cross-section of source material in depth, including novels and films that use the sound world or the figure of a string quartet to illuminate a story. Score-study, listening, and reading of secondary material will also feature regularly, both inside and outside of the classroom. Attendance at the Jupiter Quartet’s concert at Krannert on Feb 6 (fully subsidized) is expected. Grading will be based on both in-class activities and independent work in various formats, allowing students to demonstrate their successful engagement with our topics.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
