TOPIC: "Popular Music" For generations, the structure of popular music was deemed unworthy of serious scholarship; however, a recent explosion of academic focus on the genre has produced new understandings of both the musical syntax and common assumptions about analytical methods. This class engages recent scholarship to explore issues of timbre, texture, meter, form, melody, harmony, and tonality pertaining to a wide variety of recorded popular styles since the 1950s. We will read current articles and book chapters and apply the relevant strategies to original analyses of popular music. The course will culminate in a Final Project where students will apply the techniques explored in class to music of their choosing.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
