Section Title:
Rodgers and Hammerstein
Section Info:
Topic: "CRITICAL APPROACHES TO RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN." On March 28, 1954, a two-hour “Salute to Rodgers and Hammerstein” aired on all four major television networks simultaneously and captured the attention of millions of viewers. Since then, the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein have been produced continuously in professional and amateur theater in the U.S. and around the world. In recent years, however, commentators and directors have brought critical perspectives to these works that call into question their viability as produceable shows. In this course, we will study scripts, musical numbers, and productions, analyzing their artistry as works of sung theater, and bring critical perspectives to bear on them, including problematic aspects of Oklahoma! (to be staged by UI Lyric Theatre Nov. 12-16, and which we will potentially explore in tandem with another Oklahoma-based story, Killers of the Flower Moon), Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Students will be expected to deliver products of research such as essays, in-class presentations, and/or a dramaturgical plan in conjunction with a hypothetical production, together with performance options. Open to non-music students by permission of instructor.
