SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Provides non-music majors with basic listening skills, the ability to discuss music intelligently, and an acquaintance with many types of music.

Prerequisite: For non-music majors only.

Students must register for one lecture and one discussion section unless offered online in a lecture/discussion format.

Section Title: Music in Illinois Section Info: Topic: "MUSIC IN ILLINOIS." From Muddy Waters to Liz Phair, the state of Illinois has been home to diverse forms of music-making from the mid-19th century to present. This course surveys a wide range of music in Illinois, including blues, jazz, orchestra, wind band rock, country, house, and hip-hop as well as indigenous and diasporic musical traditions. By framing music around issues of place, urbanism, and identity construction, we will learn how music helps shape community identities in major cities like Chicago and Peoria as well as small towns like Newton and Charleston. During the class, we will also give special consideration to the musical heritage of Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois, considering venues like Mabels and the Red Herring as well as events like the Festival of Contemporary Arts and Farm Aid. We will also learn how local musicians have responded to wider national and international music scenes, developing local and niche styles as a result. The class will consist of weekly prepared readings, listening, and discussions; two exams; and a two short creative projects on an approved topic.
