Section Title:
Modes of Englishness
Section Info:
"Modes of Englishness: The life and music of Ralph Vaughan Williams." This class will consider the life and music of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) through the lens of Englishness and the related historical and cultural concepts that have become associated with his works, such as pastoralism, anti-industrialism, socialism, and modernism. The aim is to gain a nuanced understanding of his music and its legacy: one that will move beyond the popular interpretations that are often attached to his output and its reception. Students will prepare assigned readings and listening before classes, contribute to seminar discussions, and develop their own critical evaluation of an aspect of one of the seminar’s themes for a final research paper.
