"GLOBAL BAROQUE: MUSIC, POWER, AND THE 'EUROPEAN' TRADITION." This course will approach a global history of the “baroque tradition,” seeking to decenter our understanding of music-making in the 17th and 18th centuries. By adopting a polycentric perspective, students will study the history of music and its relationship to European colonialism and Christian missionizing. An understanding of these transnational networks of power will be explored through a series of case studies ranging from the early modern imperial courts and trading ports of South and East Asia, to the reducciones of South America and beyond. A focus on surviving repertoire from these regions will encourage students to think not only about a more diverse range of composers and performers in history, but to also question the “Europeanness” of this musical tradition both past and present.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
