Examination of one or more aspects of musical performance defined by historical era, region, genre, philosophy, etc. Can include the study of the relationship between performance, improvisation and creative process; performance and publication; performance practices of a specific genre, period, or community; etc.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, junior standing; or consent of instructor.

"CRITICAL SOURCE STUDIES IN KEYBOARD PRACTICE, 1400-1700." This course will explore keyboard practice and culture through primary sources dating between approximately 1400 and 1700. It will combine hands-on engagement with performance practices, with a focus on the cultural and material history of keyboard culture before the 18th century. Topics will include the keyboard in early colonial America, reading and playing from historical sources, instrument organology, keyboard practices and cultural identity, and the keyboard as a means of musical reproduction and transmission.
