Section Title:
Early Modern Spectacle
Section Info:
"Early Modern Spectacle: Representing Power through Musical Drama" This iteration of Music 522 focuses on (mainly) vocal-instrumental dramatic works of the early modern period that are construed as “spectacle.” Students will investigate these works—and the power structures they articulate—through engagement with weekly readings (primary and secondary), sound recordings, and scores. Two weddings bookend the semester, one real and one fictional. The course begins with an exploration of processional works and intermedii performed for the Medici wedding of 1589 and ends with Da Ponte and Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Opera constitutes a primary focus of the course, with four settings of the Orpheus and Euridice legend forming another thread of conversation (composers: Peri, Monteverdi, Rossi, Gluck). Five weeks are devoted to non-operatic theatrical and ceremonial genres, namely: oratorios, historias, ballets, cantatas, grand motets, litanies, and villancicos. Students are encouraged to work together through weekly readings and assigned repertory. Each person will be asked to lead or moderate discussions on selected materials approximately five times over the course of the spring term. Each person is additionally expected to complete an independent research project—either a semester-length term paper (minimum: 3500 words), or a mid-length paper (minimum: 2000 words) coupled with a performance piece that will feature in a group lecture-recital.
