Special preparation in specialized fields of musicology, composition-theory, performance, and music education.

0.5 to 4 undergraduate hours. 0.5 to 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours; undergraduate students in open studies may repeat the course unlimited times with approval of the open studies advisor. Prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing in music or music education; consent of instructor.

Students will gain introductory understandings of Hip-Hop history and culture, engagements of Hip-Hop culture in school settings, and contemporary socio-cultural and sociopolitical issues in Hip-Hop. Students will also create original Hip-Hop music employing idiomatic tools and processes.

The course will be presented as a combination of lectures with hands-on projects to familiarize students with proper gain and signal staging, microphone placement, and recording practices. Grading will be based on assigned lab projects and written exams. Lab times will be assigned. This course is restricted to senior and graduate music majors. Topics include choral decorum, conducting, song selection, and vocal and instrumental techniques. Additionally, participants attend musical rehearsals and perform the repertoire learned during Symposium in a closing concert. The Black Sacred Music Symposium will be Thursday-Sunday, March 7-10, 2019 in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
