Performing Rhetoric
Section Info:
This course examines the performance of rhetoric during the great ages of oratory. Using historical and performance approaches, the course focuses on the specific physical and vocal delivery styles of the various time periods. After learning why the delivery style existed and how critics described the style, we will use the performance techniques of that time period to reconstruct a rhetorical piece from that period.

Thus, this course will explore such areas as power, gender, race, social class, sexuality, ability and age. The relationship between these areas to organizational communication concepts such as, assimilation & socialization, power, culture, employee conflict and relationships will be explored.

This course challenges the notion that good ideas are produced by lone geniuses. Surveying theories from organizational communication, we will explore the important role that communication plays in fostering innovation and creativity in the workplace. Some topics discussed include: socialization, group decision-making, information sharing, positive workplace environments, the role of communication technologies, and social networks. Students will analyze real-world cases and participate in class activities designed to demonstrate innovation processes in action.

The goal of this course is to integrate theory and practice in the study of leadership. The course will require both theoretical understanding as well as practical application of leadership principles. Understanding that leaders are not born, the course will examine areas such as basic communication skills, symbolism, interpersonal communication, listening, conflict management, influencing behaviors, and leading in a crisis. This course will include topical presentations and group exercises. There will be significant weekly readings, guest speakers and out of class leadership experiences.
