Section Title:
Richard Wright's Words
Section Info:
Topic Section D: Richard Wright's Words This course uses Richard Wright?s life (1908-1960) and work as a guide for discussing literary technique, genre, media technologies, and forms of cultural criticism. Through ?Blueprint for Negro Writing? and Uncle Tom?s Children we discuss the role of the artist in society, Jim Crow histories, Wright?s use of a Marxist analysis, and his theories about folk culture and spirituality. Through iterations of Native Son (novel, plays, films, serialization), we will think about the nature of literary and cultural marketplaces and about how the novel ?works? as a literary form in conversation with other art forms. We will conclude the semester with Black Boy, Wright?s turn to haiku, and the implications of Wright?s notion of a human right to ?think and feel honestly.?
