Section Info:
Beginning with a Kryptonian?s ability to leap over tall buildings in a single bound and ending with a young artist?s lonely sojourn in a three-story Chicago brownstone, this course explores eight decades of American comics. We?ll concentrate on the formal choices artists and writers make in constructing their graphic narratives, but we?ll also pay attention to content, reading the fantastic characters and adventures of genre comics alongside the realist works that have driven graphic fiction?s rise to literary respectability in the 1990s and 2000s. Featured creators will likely include Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (Superman Chronicles), Harvey Kurtzman (Corpse on the Imjin), Steve Ditko and Stan Lee (Amazing Spider-Man), Jack Kirby (O.M.A.C.: One Man Army Corps), Diane Noomin (Glitz-2-Go), Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), Joe Sacco (Safe Area Gorazde), Lynda Barry (One Hundred Demons), Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), and Chris Ware (Building Stories).
