Prerequisite: Completion of the Composition I requirement.

Section Info: Celebrated for their emotional intensity and risk-taking styles, British writers of the Romantic period (1770-1830) loom as the original spokespersons of modernity. They witnessed earth-shattering revolutions in America and France, the birth of industrialization and the modern city, global war and colonial expansion, and the first fierce public debates over the role of women in society and the arts. This course will treat these major themes in the work of Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Austen and others through close study of the literary coteries within which they operated. The Lake Poets, the Godwin-Shelley Circle, and the Cockney School each made distinctive contributions to the extraordinary corpus of British Romanticism, but had in common a stylistic originality and radical politics that set them in bitter opposition to the cultural establishment.
