Section Info:
The United States has a long and exciting literary tradition. This tradition captures the successes and failures of collective democratic life and freedom as well as mythic origins of American individualism. Americans have written about these grand and ideological themes for hundreds of years in ways that still captivate our imagination, moral beliefs, and highly contested political lives. This survey course introduces students to American literary and cultural history from its origins through the Civil War. The weekly lectures will focus on various literary periods and genres (autobiography, pamphlets, slave narrative, the romance novel). Discussion sections will focus on connecting the broader themes from the lectures with close readings of primary texts. There will be writing assignments, a mid-term, and a final.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to English major(s) or minor(s).
