Topic: Heroes and Heroines. From Roland of the medieval epic to Beckett's clowns, this course explores the concept of heroism as culturally conditioned. Issues such as radical individualism, communal constraint, and anti-heroism form part of the discussion. Works studies: La Chanson de Roland; Corneille, Le Cid and Polyeucte; Prevost, Manon Lescaut; Flaubert, Madame Bovary; Camus, L'Etranger; and Beckett, En attendant Godot. Taught in French.
