Latin American Literatures & Cultures from 1800

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Critical analysis of selected texts and periods representative of Latin American literary and cultural production from 1800 to present, with special attention paid to broader literary and cultural contexts. Specific sections may emphasize critical topics such as gender, ideology, literary form, nationalisms, race, and sexuality, among others. Instruction in Spanish unless otherwise noted.

May be repeated in the same or separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite: SPAN 228 or consent of instructor.

	49964	Lecture-Discussion	B	11:00AM -12:20PM	TR	206 David Kinley Hall	Garcia - Blizzard, M	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/20/26-05/06/26 Section Info: Title: Imaging Mexico "Imaging Mexico” (CRN 49964) explores how since the post-independence period in the early 1800s through the present, visual cultures have participated in and commented on the formation of national identity in Mexico. We will study a variety of textual and visual mediums including the novel, painting, sculpture, architecture, prints, crafts, photography, and film in order to analyze how these various cultural forms have contributed to a variety of national projects. Students will hone the capacity to speak and write analytically about various forms of cultural production using each medium’s corresponding terminology in Spanish. Students will also acquire knowledge of major historical, artistic, and intellectual figures of the modern period in Mexico and a familiarity with critical approaches to cultural studies. Class meetings will take place on Tues. and Thurs. from 11:00 am - 12:20 pm. Language of instruction is Spanish. This course fulfills 300-level course requirements for the Spanish major or minor.
