Section Info:
This course explores Puerto Rico’s history and culture through sound and music. By framing Puerto Rico as a “sonic archive,” the course examines how listening and musical practice reveal the entanglements of identity, coloniality, capitalist extraction, and resistance from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries. A written research project related to the course’s topic will be required. This seminar does not require fluency in musical notation or the ability to play an instrument. Students interested in sound, music, and decolonial archival methods from any discipline, major, or department are welcome to register.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
