Credit: 3 hours.

Courses within this rubric provide an analytical and historical introduction to genres of popular music from the United States and around the world. Iterations of the course may focus on a specific genre, such as Rock, Reggae, or Afropop, or may deal with broader subjects, such as the continua of styles including R&B, Soul, Funk, and Hip Hop, or the pan-generic, international phenomenon of pop music globalization in the twentieth century.

Topic: “POPULAR MUSIC AND POWER.” This course reveals the connections between popular music and political power; examines how music furthers the interests of both governments and protest movements; considers the use of music in political campaigns; and explores the intersections between music and politics of gender, left- and right-wing ideologies, post-colonialism, race, sexuality, and warfare. In this class, we will discuss examples of folk music, glam rock, gospel, hip hop, punk rock, reggae, rhythm & blues, salsa, and soul in their societal context.

Section Info:
Topic: "HISTORY OF JAZZ." This course offers a chronological survey and analysis of various kinds of music that have been called jazz, from their nineteenth century roots to their contemporary expressions. We will take an expansive approach to the music. In addition to its history and practice in the United States, we will consider jazz’s connections to other styles (from the rhythms of Caribbean music to hip-hop and electronic music) and global reach. No previous musical knowledge is necessary.
