TOPIC: Music and the Cold War This course explores the intersection of music and Cold-War-era relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, their respective allies, as well as with the decolonizing world. We will reveal the varying uses of music as both propaganda and as cultural diplomacy to pursue soft power and to promote peaceful coexistence, as well as the reception and censorship of classical, folk, jazz, and popular music from the end of the Second World War to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
