Cultural Art Des Programming
Section Info:
CULTURAL ART DESIGN PROGRAMMING FOR URBAN ENVIRONMENTS. Students engage architectural programming to explore design issues and their intellectual impact on cultural art facility projects in the urban environment. Whether defining a “thesis” exploration or a professionally based project, programming provides a platform to understand the base quantification of subject needs and the intellectual underpinnings to allow for a comprehensive critical inquiry of the site, spatial needs, and material challenges to be embedded in the urban environment.

Section Title:
Design of Built Environment
Section Info:
The Design of the Built Environment is meant to be experienced. To understand our world, one must be a part of it. Once engaged with the environment the observer can make associations with past experiences and make connections to things learned previously. In this way there are two worlds, the world of perceptions and the world of conceptions. The two basic philosophical approaches to understanding our environment, the phenomenological and the ontological, are addressed. Structured as a set of group walking tours of the University of Illinois and surrounding context, the course centers on connecting theories with insights aimed at improving the lives of all participants. Uses a free online textbook.
