This course surveys the architecture and urbanism in the territory of the present-day United States from c.1650 CE forward. Topics include Native American urban centers; the diverse national origins of colonial architecture; the ongoing significance of vernacular forms; the search for an architecture of democracy; the architecture of slavery; industrialization and the built environment; the Great Migration, urbanization, and architecture; the rise of a formal architectural profession; Modernist architectures in the U.S.; architecture, real estate, and the forces of capital investment; new technologies and the built environment.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. Prerequisite: ARCH 210, ARTH 112, or consent of instructor.
