- Section Title:
- Climate Risk & Adapt. in US NP
- Section Info:
- This graduate seminar offers a rare opportunity to work on real-world climate adaptation challenges facing National Park Service (NPS) units across the Midwest, collaborating directly with NPS staff and graduate students from four partner universities. Designed for students in ecology, natural resource conservation, climate science, environmental policy, geography, and related fields, the course is especially well-suited for those drawn to applied, place-based work with public agencies. Students will develop practical skills in evaluating, synthesizing, and translating complex climate information into actionable insights for real management decisions — culminating in an NPS-requested regional climate sensitivity report that serves as a meaningful professional deliverable. The course is excellent preparation for careers in public land management, climate adaptation, science policy, or environmental consulting. Once registered, enrolled students will be contacted by course instructors to identify a compatible course meeting time/date. To request being added to the waiting list for this course if it is full, complete the form at https://go.illinois.edu/NREScourserequests

- Section Title:
- Trends in Env Policy
- Section Info:
- In recent years, the U.S. Supreme Court has issued major decisions on landmark environmental laws including the Clean Water, Clean Air, and National Environmental Protection Acts while federal agencies have proposed and implemented multiple rule changes. Given their wide-ranging impacts on issues from biodiversity conservation to climate mitigation, rule changes affect the study systems, research approaches, and study implications of applied environmental scientists. Through weekly reading and discussions, this course will help students contextualize and assess these changes, specifically, to appreciate the history and advocacy shaping U.S. environmental laws, discuss studies from multiple disciplines evaluating their impact, and explore novel policy opportunities.
