- Section Title:
- Ethics and the Environment
- Section Info:
- This is a course on environmental ethics that engages students in the normative theory and practice of sustainability. The course divides into roughly two parts, each corresponding to a different text. In the first normative part of the course, we will explore key ethical concepts such as rights, duties, and distributive justice, and their application to issues of climate-related harm to humans, animals, and ecosystems. In the second empirical part of the course, we will explore recent findings in behavioral economics and the psychology of persuasion to better understand why climate justice has been so challenging to achieve and how we, at a grassroots level, can more easily contribute to remedying climate harms and create more sustainable communities. Throughout the semester we will participate in programs and activities that advance greener practices here on the University of Illinois campus. A day trip to the Missouri Botanical Gardens for a sustainability tour and garden exploration is included in the course! (save the September 19 date!) Required books are also included in the course: • Elizabeth Cripps, What Climate Justice Means and Why We Should Care • Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness. Sustainability and Innovation LLC residents will have priority to take this course, but all interested students are welcome to enroll.
