- This course provides specialized knowledge about the historical roots and evolution of science journalism, offering an essential foundation to practitioners. From early twentieth century publishers who saw the popularization of science knowledge as critical to democracy, to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and beyond, the course critically examines pathbreakers, icons, and classic works pivotal to the field’s development. Science journalism’s historical impact, including important regulatory reforms that changed business and the economy, and benefitted the consuming public, are also studied.
