Digital Photography for Everyone

Credit: 3 hours.

Foundations of digital photography, techniques to produce photographs; the conception and planning of pictures; the pictorial coverage of locations, events and human interest situations; and the planning and execution of photos in print, on the web and other electronic media are the focus of this hands-on course. You will develop a practical understanding of the potentials and realities of photographic communication to better use them for full expression of your vision.

Approved for Letter and S/U grading.

In this class, you'll learn how to move beyond snapshots into intentional image-making—whether you're documenting a community, building a creative portfolio, or supporting a research project with visual evidence. We approach photography as a form of scholarship. That means learning how to see, how to frame, and how to communicate something real through the lens. You'll be introduced to core photographic principles—exposure, composition, lighting—and you'll apply them through regular hands-on assignments. Expect critique, iteration, and growth. No prior photography experience needed. You may use any digital camera but will need regular access to a computer and basic editing tools (e.g., Adobe Bridge, Lightroom, Snapseed, or even your phone’s native editor).
