Section Info:
Title: Arts based teaching and learning in K-12 education. Description: In a rapidly changing educational landscape, teachers are increasingly seeking ways to engage learners, foster creativity, and support deeper understanding across disciplines. This course explores arts-based approaches to teaching and learning, examining how practices drawn from the visual, performing, literary, and digital arts can enrich educational experiences in diverse settings. We will explore research and theory on arts-based learning, creativity, embodiment, storytelling, reflection, and meaning-making, while considering the role of the arts in supporting equity, engagement, and student agency. This course draws on scholarship from arts-based education researchers as well as examples from classroom practice and community-based learning environments. Particular attention is given to a wide range of artistic practices, including painting, photography, fashion, music, theater, dance, poetry, storytelling, comics, podcasting, gaming, and other creative forms of expression. We will examine how these practices can support inquiry, communication, collaboration, and sense-making across educational contexts.
