2nd-8 weeks. BUSINESS STRATEGIES FOR PROFESSIONAL SPORT ORGANIZATIONS. The course examines historical context of the professional support industry, along with modern issues impacting the front office of professional sport franchises. Course will utilize Sports Business Journal. Topics include league and team sponsorship and marketing, broadcasting and media rights, assembling a front office staff, salary caps and competitive balance, the use of analytics in sport, trends in stadium design, and more. The perspective is strategy-based with an orientation to building fans, viewers, sponsorships, and revenues. Students will synthesize course materials to create a proposal for an expansion franchise.

Topics related to social justice have increasingly taken center stage in today’s sport industry. To train future sport leaders in social justice competencies, this community-engaged, experiential learning course will empower students to teach high school athletes in Champaign County a curriculum focused on social justice leadership, titled IC-ChangeS (Inclusive Champions for Change through Sport). Students will gain both topical expertise (example topics: identity, unconscious bias, cultural competence, allyship) and effective facilitation training to develop the inclusive leadership skills needed to promote social justice in and through sport. Outdoor Recreation Consortium
Section Info:
Course Title: Outdoor Recreation Consortium – Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The purpose of the Outdoor Recreation Consortium is to provide students with hands-on exposure to outdoor recreation and natural resource management in the context of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This course is designed to increase students' understanding and appreciation of outdoor recreation resources, the agencies managing those resources, the management strategies used, and the factors affecting management, including issues related to the nearby “gateway communities” and the park’s surrounding environment. The course format is one that focuses on problem solving, encourages a high level of interaction among participating students, faculty and park managers, and gives participants an opportunity to connect with nature. This course has a non-refundable class fee, and includes a required six-day trip to GSMNP (March 16 to March 21), where students will stay at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute, a nature education center within the park boundaries.

This Spring the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism will celebrate the life and impact of the legendary coach and visionary administrator George Huff (1872 – 1936). The Illini Athletic Director’s influence on our campus, and pioneering role in community service, facility development, philanthropy, and management has inspired generations of students, faculty, and practitioners. The 2025 Sapora Symposium will honor the legacy of the AHS Faculty Member by hosting a series of contemporary influencers, change makers, and leaders whose work emulates “G”’s role at the University of Illinois. The (1-2 hr) course will coincide with the 100th anniversary of Huff Hall, the home to the Department of Recreation, Sport, and Tourism since its founding in 1957. Sustainability & Rural Tourism
Section Info:
This exciting, one-of-a-kind course combines community-based tourism development principles with hands-on developing and planning practices in the context of rural China. Co-taught by faculty from architecture, art & design, and recreation, sport and tourism, the interdisciplinary course provides students with first-hand knowledge of how rural communities can leverage tourism to achieve economic, socio-cultural, and environmental sustainability. Students will work side-by-side with peers from architecture and art & design to develop a comprehensive tourism development plan in Jingdezhen, China. Working directly with local stakeholders (residents, local governments, the business community, etc.), students will gain valuable skills in asset mapping, competitor analysis, market analysis, community visioning, development planning, and marketing planning. This course includes an optional 10-day field trip to China, where students can immerse themselves in the unique culture, meet community partners and stakeholders, and see planning concepts in action. Meets with RST 594, ARH 572, and ARTD 499.
