Provides students with professional career exploration experiences that involve developing networking knowledge and skills while engaging with recreation, sport, and tourism industry alumni and professionals in their offices, agencies, and facilities. Students are exposed to best practices and current challenges in the industry, and are given opportunities to make connections for internships, mentorship, and career advancement.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. Approved for S/U grading only. May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum 3 hours.

Exploring Chicago: This course provides career and RST industry exploration. Students will develop networking skills, while engaging with RST industry alumni and professionals in their offices, agencies, and facilities. Best practices and current issues will be explored. Students will have the potential to make connections for future internships and career advancement. Potential site visits and networking opportunities could include Chicago Bears (NFL), Chicago Bulls (NBA), Chicago Cubs and/or Chicago White Sox (MLB), Wintrust Arena, Navy Pier, Oak Lawn Ice Arena, various park districts, Toyota Park, Schaumburg Sport Center, and more. Exact dates of the two-day trip are TBD. Course includes a $160 fee, to cover hotel and transportation. In addition, there will be three one-hour class times scheduled with the trip. Section Info:
1st-8 weeks. ILLINI “Get your kicks on Route 66” Develop networking skills, with RST industry alumni & professionals while exploring Illinois via the “Mother Road”. Best practices and current issues will be explored, with an emphasis on tourism trends and the history & legends that made them iconic. Site visits include The Gateway Arch, Litchfield Route 66 District, Springfield Legislative Campus, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site, Funk Grove Maple Syrup Farm, and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Tour scheduled for Feb 28 – March 2. Orientation and wrap up meetings scheduled for Feb 10, Feb 24, March 10 at 4PM.
