In this course we will study the principles of Indian religious art through a selection of primary and secondary readings, and a vast collection of images. We will learn to identify the different structures and styles of Indian sacred buildings of the classical and medieval periods, and we will explore how they served their religious purposes. Also, we will study some of the masterpieces of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain art, highlighting the social status and agency of the artists who created them.

Eight weeks, eight objects, one object a week. The course will guide you through the main aspects of Jainism by looking at its objects, including artworks (statues, manuscripts, etc.), but also items used in everyday life (the ascetic's clothes, teapots, etc.). The course offers a survey of Jainism through a selection of skillfully designed objects with the aim to convey the importance of material culture in understanding the Jain religious tradition.

Perhaps no other Buddhist scripture has had more impact on East Asian Culture than The Lotus Sutra. After reading the sutra and recent scholarship concerning its production and reception in India and China, we will examine the fundamental role the sutra played in Japanese Buddhism, with special attention to medieval Tendai and Nichiren. Attention will also be given to the impact the Lotus Sutra has had on art, literature, gender and Japanese society.
