Korean Politics

Title: Korean Politics This course is offered online via BTAA CourseShare and will be taught synchronously via zoom by Prof. Jean (Ji Yeon) Hong in the Department of Political Science at University of Michigan. This is a comparative politics course on Korea targeting advanced undergraduate students. South Korea has transformed from one of the poorest countries ridden by a years-long civil and international conflict to an economic powerhouse with significant cultural and technological influences on the world. Politically, the country went through three regimes of dictatorships for about four decades, with a brief democratic break in 1960, followed by democratization backed by the popular uprising in 1987 and democratic consolidation since then. Throughout this course, we will discuss important substantive questions that are key to understanding contemporary political phenomena in South Korea. We will also briefly look into the politics and political economy of North Korea. This course is designed to build perspectives to understand and analyze the domestic politics of South Korea by exposing students to the basic literature in political science related to Korean studies and comparative politics.
